Why Case Studies Are Underrated for Link Building

Case studies build trust AND backlinks. Here is how to write ones that get cited across the web.

The Double Win

Case studies do two things simultaneously:

  • Convert prospects into customers (social proof)
  • Earn backlinks from writers who cite your results
  • Most companies use them for sales. Few leverage them for link building.

    That's a missed opportunity.

    Why Case Studies Get Linked

Writers need proof. When someone writes "email marketing generates a 42:1 ROI," they need a source. A case study with real numbers is that source.

Your specific results become quotable statistics.

"Company X increased organic traffic by 312% in 6 months using [strategy]" — THAT gets cited. We dive deeper into case study content for SEO in a separate guide.

    The Link-Worthy Case Study Format

Lead with the number. "How We Increased [Metric] by [X%] in [Timeframe]"

Include specific data points. Real numbers. Before and after. Timelines. Not vague "significant improvements."

Explain the methodology. What exactly did you do? Step by step.

Make it replicable. Readers should be able to apply your approach to their own situation.

Include quotes. From the client, from your team. Makes it feel real and quotable.

    The Promotion Angle

When you publish a case study with impressive results, pitch it to industry bloggers and journalists. Use HARO/Connectively to find journalists actively seeking this kind of data.

"We just published a case study showing [specific result]. Thought it might be useful for your coverage of [topic]."

Specific, impressive results get picked up. Ahrefs' link building guide confirms that data-backed content consistently earns the most links.
