Your Competitors Know Something You Don't
They're ranking for keywords you haven't even considered.
They're capturing traffic you should be getting.
And they're doing it with content you could have written.
That's the gap. And it's costing you money every single day you don't close it.
What Is Content Gap Analysis?
Content gap analysis compares your keyword rankings against your competitors' rankings to find opportunities you're missing.
It answers one simple question: "What are they ranking for that I'm not?"
After 500+ campaigns and 20+ years, I can tell you -- the answer is always more than you'd expect.
How to Run One
Step 1: Identify 3-5 direct competitors. Not aspirational competitors. Companies that are actually competing for your keywords right now.
Step 2: Pull their keyword data. Use Ahrefs, SEMrush, or whatever tool you prefer. Export their ranking keywords.
Step 3: Compare. Find keywords where competitors rank in the top 20 but you don't rank at all. That's your gap.
Step 4: Filter for opportunity. Not every gap is worth closing. Filter by search volume, keyword difficulty, and commercial intent. You want gaps that, once closed, will actually move the needle.
Step 5: Map to content. For each gap keyword, determine the content type needed. Blog post? Landing page? Guide? Look at what's ranking and create something better. If you need a refresher on how to approach keyword research from scratch, we've got you covered.
The Prioritization Matrix
Plot your gap keywords on two axes:
Start with the bottom-right quadrant: high business value, easy to rank for. That's your low-hanging fruit.
