Core Web Vitals as a Ranking Factor: What Actually Matters

Google says Core Web Vitals matter. But how much? Here is what 500+ campaigns taught us about speed and rankings.

Everyone Talks About Core Web Vitals. Almost Nobody Gets Them Right.

Let me guess.

You ran PageSpeed Insights once. Got a score of 47. Panicked. Hired some "performance expert" off Fiverr who made it worse.

Sound about right?

Here is the thing most SEO agencies will never tell you: Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor, but they are a tiebreaker, not a trump card.

What Core Web Vitals Actually Measure

Three things. That is it. (Google's own documentation breaks them down in detail.)

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): How fast your main content loads. Under 2.5 seconds is good. Over 4 seconds? You are bleeding visitors. We wrote an entire post on how to fix LCP if yours is bad.

FID (First Input Delay): How fast your page responds when someone clicks. Under 100ms is the target.

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): How much your page jumps around while loading. Under 0.1 is the goal. Anything higher and your visitors are playing whack-a-mole trying to click the right button. Read our CLS deep dive for the fixes.

What We Have Seen Across 500+ Campaigns

After 20+ years doing this, here is what we know for certain:

Core Web Vitals will not rescue garbage content. Full stop.

But when two pages are equally relevant, equally authoritative, equally well-optimized — the faster one wins. Every time.

That tiebreaker matters more than you think. Especially in competitive niches where everyone has decent content and decent links.

The Biggest Mistake People Make

They chase the PageSpeed Insights score like it is a video game.

It is not.

A score of 100 means nothing if your actual user experience is trash. And a score of 72 can be perfectly fine if your real-world metrics are solid.

Focus on field data (real user metrics), not lab data (synthetic tests). Chrome User Experience Report is your friend here. Run your pages through PageSpeed Insights and look at the field data section — that is what Google actually uses.

Core Web Vitals are just one piece of a complete SEO audit. Do not optimize speed in isolation.
