Local Links for Local Rankings
Want to rank in Germany? You need links from German websites.
Want to rank in Japan? You need links from Japanese websites.
Google's algorithm is geo-aware. Links from the target country carry significantly more weight for local rankings than international links.
The International Playbook
Country-specific outreach. You need someone who speaks the language and understands the culture. Outreach templates that work in the US don't translate (literally or figuratively) to Japan or Brazil. The core principles from our outreach email templates guide still apply, but the execution needs to be localized.
Local directories and publications. Every country has its own equivalents of industry directories, news sites, and blogs. Find them.
Local partnerships. Partner with companies in each target market for co-marketing and cross-linking opportunities.
Localized content. Don't just translate your English content. Create content specifically for each market. Local topics, local data, local references.
Common Mistakes
The Hreflang Connection
Make sure your hreflang tags are properly set up so link equity flows to the right language/country version of your pages. This is a technical SEO detail that can make or break international campaigns — our guide on schema markup covers similar structured data concepts.
A link to your English page doesn't help your German page unless the hreflang relationship is properly established. Search Engine Journal's link building guide has an excellent section on international considerations.
