The On-Page SEO Checklist

Title Tag

  • Primary keyword included (ideally near the front)
  • Under 60 characters
  • Compelling enough to earn the click
  • Unique across your site
  • Meta Description

  • Primary keyword included naturally
  • Under 155 characters
  • Includes a call-to-action or value proposition
  • Not duplicated from another page
  • URL Structure

  • Short and descriptive
  • Primary keyword included
  • No unnecessary parameters or numbers
  • Hyphens between words (not underscores)
  • Header Tags

  • One H1 tag (and only one)
  • H1 includes primary keyword
  • H2s for main sections
  • H3s for subsections
  • Logical hierarchy (no skipping levels)
  • Content Body

  • Primary keyword in first 100 words
  • Semantic variations used naturally throughout
  • Minimum 300 words (most topics need 1,000+)
  • No keyword stuffing
  • Readable (short sentences, short paragraphs)
  • Unique (not duplicated or heavily templated)
  • Internal Links

  • 3-5 internal links per post minimum
  • Descriptive anchor text (not "click here")
  • Links to relevant, high-value pages
  • Links from existing content back to new content
  • Images

  • Descriptive alt text with keyword where natural
  • Compressed file size
  • Descriptive file names (not IMG_4392.jpg)
  • At least one relevant image per post
  • External Links

  • 2-3 links to authoritative external sources
  • Open in new tab
  • Relevant and current
  • Schema Markup

  • Article schema for blog posts
  • FAQ schema where applicable
  • Breadcrumb schema
