The OG Link Building Technique
The Skyscraper Technique is simple:
Brian Dean coined it. Thousands of SEOs adopted it. And for a while, it worked beautifully.
The Problem in 2026
Everyone knows the playbook now.
Every site linking to the original piece has received 47 other "I created something even better!" emails this month.
The technique is a victim of its own success.

But Here's the Nuance
The FRAMEWORK still works. The execution needs to evolve.
The Updated Approach
Step 1: Find content with backlinks — Same as before. Use Ahrefs' backlink checker to find well-linked content.
Step 2: Don't just "make it longer" — The original skyscraper advice was essentially "add more points." In 2026, longer isn't better. DIFFERENT is better. Add original data. Include expert quotes. Create interactive elements. Offer a genuinely new perspective.
Step 3: Don't use the "skyscraper" pitch — If your email says "I created a more comprehensive version of [article]," it's going straight to trash. Instead, pitch the unique value your content adds. Why should they care about YOUR version?
Step 4: Target NEW linkers too — Don't just contact people who linked to the original. Build a fresh outreach prospect list of new prospects who would benefit from your unique angle.
