GBP Categories: The #1 Ranking Factor Most Businesses Get Wrong

Your primary category is the biggest ranking signal in your GBP. Choose wrong and you're fighting with one hand tied behind your back.

Your Category Is Your Destiny

If there's one field in your Google Business Profile that matters more than any other, it's your primary category.

It's the #1 ranking factor for the local pack.

Get it right and you're in the game. Get it wrong and no amount of reviews or backlinks will save you.

How to Choose Your Primary Category

Be specific. Ridiculously specific.

If you're a personal injury lawyer, your category should be "Personal Injury Attorney" — not "Lawyer" or "Law Firm."

If you're a pediatric dentist, use "Pediatric Dentist" — not just "Dentist."

Google has over 4,000 categories to choose from. Find the one that matches your core service most precisely. Good keyword research will tell you what your customers actually search for — start there.

Secondary Categories: Stack the Deck

You can add up to 9 secondary categories. Use them.

A plumber might have:

  • Primary: Plumber
  • Secondary: Water Heater Installation Service, Drain Cleaning Service, Bathroom Remodeler, Gas Installation Service
  • Each secondary category opens up new keyword opportunities. But don't add categories for services you don't actually offer. Google will catch that, and it won't be pretty.

    Spy on Your Competitors

Use tools like PlePer or GMB Everywhere to see what categories your competitors are using. If they're ranking above you and using a different primary category, that's a clue. Moz's local SEO guide is another excellent resource for competitive category research.
