Crystal Ball SEO
What if you could predict how much traffic a keyword will bring before you create any content?
You can. Sort of.
Keyword forecasting isn't fortune-telling. It's math. And it's surprisingly accurate when done right.
The Basic Forecasting Formula
Monthly search volume x Expected CTR for your target position = Estimated monthly traffic
Example:
Keyword volume: 1,000/month
Target position: #3
Expected CTR for position #3: ~8%
Estimated monthly traffic: 1,000 x 0.08 = 80 visits/month
Simple. Useful. Directionally accurate.
CTR by Position (Rough Benchmarks)
Position #1: 25-30%
Position #2: 12-15%
Position #3: 7-9%
Positions #4-6: 3-6%
Positions #7-10: 1-3%
These vary by SERP features. If there's a featured snippet or ad-heavy SERP, CTRs are lower.
Advanced Forecasting
Factor in SERP Features
If the keyword triggers featured snippets, knowledge panels, or shopping results, organic CTRs drop. Adjust your forecast down by 20-40%.
Factor in Keyword Difficulty
Estimate when you'll realistically rank. KD 10? Maybe 2-3 months. KD 40? Maybe 6-12 months.
Build a timeline into your forecast.
Factor in Conversion Rate
Traffic x Conversion Rate = Leads/Sales
Now you're forecasting revenue, not just visits. This is what stakeholders actually care about. Our keyword ROI calculation framework takes this even further.
Why Forecast?
Forecasting helps you:
After 500+ campaigns, forecasting is how we justify every keyword we target. If the math doesn't work, we don't pursue it. These are the kinds of SEO KPIs that actually matter. Ahrefs explains their traffic potential methodology which is a solid complement to basic forecasting.
