You Can't Move Your Business. But You Can Move Your Rankings.
Proximity — how close your business is to the person searching — is a legitimate ranking factor for local search.
All things being equal, the closer business wins.
But all things are rarely equal.
How Proximity Works
When someone searches "dentist near me," Google uses their device's location to determine proximity. A dentist 0.5 miles away has an advantage over one 5 miles away.
For mobile searches (which are the majority of local searches), proximity is weighted more heavily than for desktop.
What You Can't Control
Where the searcher is physically standing. That's it.
What You CAN Control (To Overcome Proximity)
Review dominance. A business 3 miles away with 400 reviews at 4.8 stars can outrank a business 0.5 miles away with 20 reviews at 3.9 stars. Our guide on how reviews impact rankings has the data.
GBP completeness. A fully optimized GBP profile beats a neglected one regardless of distance.
Citation strength. Strong, consistent citations signal to Google that your business is established and trustworthy.
Content relevance. A website with detailed, localized content proves relevance to Google.
Backlink authority. Strong domain authority from quality backlinks can overcome proximity disadvantage.
Come closer. Listen.

The Multi-Location Advantage
If proximity is killing you in certain neighborhoods, consider opening satellite locations. Even a small office can create a new GBP presence in a high-value area.
But ONLY if it's a real, staffed location. Fake addresses will get you suspended.
