Service Area Pages: How to Rank in Cities Where You Don't Have an Office

No physical office in a city? You can still rank there. Service area pages are the key — if you build them right.

You Don't Need an Office to Rank Locally

Service area businesses — plumbers, electricians, cleaning services, mobile vets — travel to the customer. They don't have storefronts in every city they serve.

But they still need to rank in those cities.

Enter service area pages.

Service Area Pages vs. City Pages

The difference is subtle but important.

City pages are for businesses WITH a physical location in that city — our city pages guide covers those. They include an address, a map pin, and local schema with a street address.

Service area pages are for businesses that SERVE a city but don't have a physical location there. No address. No map pin. The schema uses areaServed instead of a physical address.

How to Build Effective Service Area Pages

Unique content is non-negotiable. Same rules as city pages — no copy-paste with city name swaps.

Show proof you serve the area. Customer testimonials, completed project photos, and case studies from that city.

Include travel logistics. "Our team arrives within 45 minutes for emergencies in [city]." This reinforces that you actually service the area.

Use ServiceArea schema. This tells Google you serve an area without claiming a physical presence there. Our location-specific schema markup guide has the code examples. The schema.org LocalBusiness spec documents the areaServed property.

Come closer. Listen.

Google's guidelines are clear: don't create a GBP listing with a fake address in a city you don't have an office in. That's a suspension waiting to happen.

Instead, create service area pages on your website and set your GBP listing as a service area business (SAB) covering those cities.

The Ranking Reality

Will you rank as easily without a physical address? No. Local proximity is a real ranking factor. But service area pages combined with local content, citations, and reviews from customers in that area can absolutely get you into competitive positions.
