Service Area Business SEO: How to Rank When You Don't Have a Storefront

No storefront? No problem. Service area businesses can dominate local search — but the strategy is different.

No Address Doesn't Mean No Rankings

Plumbers, electricians, mobile detailers, home cleaners, pet groomers — millions of businesses operate without a customer-facing storefront.

Google calls these Service Area Businesses (SABs). And they can absolutely rank in local search.

But the strategy is different from storefront businesses.

SAB GBP Setup

Hide your address. In your GBP settings, mark yourself as a service area business and hide your physical address. Using your home address as a public business address is against Google's guidelines.

Set service areas. Define the cities, counties, or regions you serve. Be realistic — don't claim you serve an entire state.

Use your real business address for verification. Google needs to verify you're in the area. Your home address works for verification — it just won't be displayed publicly.

The SAB Ranking Challenge

Here's the hard truth: SABs face a proximity disadvantage. Google uses proximity as a major ranking factor, and without a visible address, it's harder to signal to Google exactly where you are.

Come closer. Listen.

This doesn't mean you can't rank. It means you have to work harder on the factors you CAN control.

What SABs Should Focus On

Reviews mentioning locations. "They came to our home in Cedar Park and were fantastic." Google reads this and associates you with Cedar Park.

Service area pages on your website. Detailed pages for every city you serve with unique content, local references, and customer testimonials.

Local citations. Build citations with your business address (even though it's hidden on GBP, it still needs to be consistent across directories).

Local content. Blog posts, case studies, and FAQ content that references the specific areas you serve.

Local link building. Links from websites in the areas you serve strengthen your geographic relevance.

SABs Can Win

You won't always beat the storefront business with the Google pin right in the searcher's zip code. But with a solid strategy, you can rank in the local pack for many of your service area cities.
